Please come along and show your support!

Dear friends,

As some of you will be aware we have been supporting a campaign in defence of Lena Hendry, a Malaysian Human Rights Defender who has been found guilty of screening the documentary No Fire Zone, allegedly without the permission of the Malaysian Censorship Board. Lena’s arrest and persecution appears to have been a direct result of pressure from government of Sri Lanka officials seeking to suppress the film. She will be sentenced on 22 March, and faces three years in jail and/or a maximum fine of 30,000 Malaysian Ringgit (£5400/$6700). We are calling on the Malaysian authorities to immediately drop the charges against her and overturn the conviction.

With Lena’s blessing and support, we are planning a picket at the Malaysian High Commission this coming Thursday 9th March. I would like to invite you to join us for a protest outside the Malaysian High Commission in London (45, Belgrave Square, SW1X 8QT), from 6.00-7.00pm that day. (Or if you are elsewhere in the world we would encourage you to try and organise a small picket outside the Malaysian Embassy in your country)

We imagine the pickets – including the London one – will be modest affairs of about 10-30 people – enough to generate some press coverage and to get the High Commission to report back to the government that it has taken place. Crucially, we will aim to produce some photographs that Pusat Komas (Lena’s organisation) can turn into a press release the following day. We have teamed up with a few volunteers from Global Bersih, a UK-based Malaysian human rights organisation, but it is the participation of people like you that will really will make the difference.

We are working on some materials for the London picket, including a banner and a few posters, but please feel free to bring and make your own. Some suggested slogans and ideas can be found in the attached materials. We’d also welcome any suggestions for stunts or eye-catchers, and if you have any interesting props – say, some old film reel – please do bring them along! Please bring cameras (and cameraphones) to tweet and circulate the pictures on social media

Do please let me know if you can make it, and of course please feel free to bring a friend.

Best wishes,

Callum (No Fire Zone)

Yolanda (Global Bersih)
